Crimson Peak analysis

                             Crimson Peak film analysis

Crimson Peak is 2015, gothic-horror film featuring Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska. The film is based around a family who owns an industrial company, mining oil. In this clip, I'll be analysing the conventions of this film and the effects of the conventions.

Firstly, the clip uses a variety of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds to co-inside with the visuals. The eerie non-diegetic music that imitates the distant sound of a women humming a child's lullaby, which is heard directly after Edith (Mia Wasikowska) wakes up. Then the non-diegetic sounds are quickly overpowered by dietetic of the dog barking and the creaking of the floorboards, this creates a more realistic atmosphere to engulf the audience in fear and dread that something will happen. When the action the audience has been anticipating occurs the diegetic sound of the door closing becomes exaggerated as well as the non-diegetic sound of a women moaning which confuses Edith, this is all to increase the audiences fear and adrenaline for the scare. The much-anticipated scare is notified by the sudden change in dynamics it shifts from a door creaking to a sharp streak of violins to  screams and moaning of a unknown character at this moment in the clip, the unknown creature who appears to be a women and covered in red liquid creates an enigma code to the audience as they want to know who she is. The sudden extreme sounds of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are a convention of the horror genre.

In this clip of Crimson Peak, there are a variety of shots used. first of all we start with a medium shot where we see Edith waking suddenly which leads to the camera zooming out to a medium long shot where we see the background and her surroundings, this allows the audience to see the vulnerable situation Edith happens to be in. The camera pans around to a long shot so we can see Edith and the empty side of the bed which conveys the idea that Edith is insignificant compared to the rest of the house as she's alone. When Edith is walking around the house the camera is tracking behind her in a close up which conveys the idea that we are creeping up behind her, this is all to create a build up of tension as the audience and Edith are trying to find something. When the action is on screen the camera tends to stay in close up which allows Wasikowska's emotions to be clearly expressed for the audience to fully see the scared and confused emotions which mirror the audience's emotions.

Crimson Peak uses low-key lighting which is another convention of the horror genre. The lighting used reflect the eerie surroundings the blues, greens and blacks create a cold atmospere which contrasts heavily with the orange-red glow coming from the candles, which create a little glimpse of hope but the warm glow coming from the candles only highlight Edith which could foreshadow that in this film she is the hero.

The audience are very much involved in this film, for example when Edith goes to the door after hearing what she thinks is her dog wanting to be let out and trying to make herself less scared "how did you get in there you silly doggy" the colloquial language of 'silly' and 'doggy' reflect the audiences intentions in wanting to not be scared however this is not achieved as audience is put into privileged spectator position where we see the unknown creature which then appears to Edith's shock.

In conclusion, Crimson Peak uses a variety of techniques to elevate the horror genre and appeal to the target audience.
