Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse

Asif Kapadia and Nick Broomfield

End sequence:

Asif Kapadia uses archive footage in order to convey the events in Amy's life and how every turn could of been a root cause to her death. Kapadia uses voice overs which are married up to the onscreen visuals to illustrate what exactly is going on Amy Winehouse's head, the interviews are from friends and family of Amy Winehouse's which juxtaposes how the media portrayed Amy. The media loved to focus on the darker side of Amy Winehouse and what that could mean for her career but with the use of the voice over interviews it provides a different amount of context to why Amy went down the root of drugs and alcohol.

The end sequence a multitude of emotions are revealed with the voice over from Amy Winehouse's doctor saying that "she could go 4 weeks at a time without alcohol" this creates this level of sadness an pity in the viewer as Amy was for once happy and was feeling okay which is extremely rare as from what the documentary has shown of Amy is that vulnerable and hasn't found her own feet to stand on. However the voice over is juxtaposed with the on-screen visuals of Amy walking down the street with a masses of paparazzi taking pictures with the flashes of the camera, the shots used in this scene is long a long which allows as much of the paparazzi to be featured on the screen at one time which creates the feeling that we are invading Amy's privacy. This is something Kapadia has used numerous times before as it creates how Amy is feeling but visually, the chaotic crowded space with numerous layers of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds create an uncomfortable for the audience watching. However this scene from the end sequence is different from the rest as its just the visuals and the voice over from her doctor enlightening the audience how well Amy is doing this could be a way Kapadia signifies just how well Amy is doing as the paparazzi scene is more comfortable to watch. The non-diegetic music used is a lot more upbeat and Jazz like reflecting the true Amy. However the is all heavily opposed when there was an upcoming show in Belgrade the layers Kapadia has created have changed from happy and hopeful to doubtful as the visuals are of her in a bar drinking looking lost and alone with the non-diegetic music being mellow violins with the voice over from her friend saying she got wasted in order to limit her chances of going to this show the shots being used are very intrusive the camera zooming on Amy in the bar from a window in a long shit so we see her body language and her looking lost and confused to illustrate that Amy is being subjected to be portrayed in a way that sets her up to be seen as someone who is suffering or ungrateful for her talent and fame.

The shots from the show are all from fans perspective, the lights flashes the screams and the amount of people all relate to how the paparazzi shots were used but this scene in particular creates the chaotic atmosphere but on a larger scale. The first shot used at the concert is a shot from a helicopter showing the mass amount of people waiting for Amy, this used in the same context show create the emotions Amy will be feeling. The footage from the concert is a lower quality from what we've previously seen which provides a sense of realism and believable material, the shots from the fans are long and wide shots where in which we can see the stage and the musicians which then zooms in on Amy adding to the claustrophobic atmosphere Kapadia is trying to create. The diegetic sounds of the cheers and the screams all for Amy add to the increasing pressure for Amy to be the old Amy singing the same records and pleasing the audience rather than pleasing herself. The different shots used within this scene create a feeling of confusion  as all the shots are from fan perspectives which coneys their confusions, the viewers concern for Amy and of course Amy's unwillingness to participate in her show. Then kapadia uses his layering technique to illustrate just how much confusion Amy and her band is feeling, the boos of the crowd with the bright lights and the masses amount of people paired with a voiceover by the bass guitarists as well as subtitles of what the crowd is shouting at Amy and her band, creates layers upon layers to fully emphasise how troubled Amy is in this current situation. The lack of high quality shots from the band's perspectives all belittle Amy as someone who has been thrown into the limelight from such a young age and has had no time in order to discover her true self or be live the life of a normal 20+ year old. Towards the end of the scene
