Short Analysis

About A Girl:

  • The quality of filming in this short film is a lower quality which alludes to the the quality of life the girl is currently living under. The film starts with a low angle in a wide long short with the sillohette. The darkness could be a reference to the the harsh lifestyle the girl faces. From this short film I will take the the grainy quality which adds a different type of aesthetic and handheld camera adds.
  • About A Girl follows a young girl who is narrating to the camera, breaking the fourth wall, telling the audience about her life, the audience hearing the narration and seeing the visuals that correspond with the narration understand the plot and have sympathy for the girl who only wants to sing.

Connect:

  • The lack of dialogue within this short film conveys that we rely on the mise-en-scene and cinematography to read the intended emotions. Connect uses shallow focus to make the unnamed women be in focus but the background and traffic lights look like colourful orbs dancing in the night sky. What I will take from Connect is the lack of dialogue and the fantasy and dreamlike narrative.
  • Connect is my favourite as the plot have many twists but still keeps the dream-like mise-en-scene

Curfew:

  • Curfew has a darker narrative with references to drugs and suicide. The dark narrative is accompanied various scenes that fuels a narrative that began with an enigma and ended with a narrative twist. Again a fantasy like dance sequence the young girl dancing down a bowling alley, this could allude to the drugs the uncle takes and the hallucinating effects drugs have, or it could be a nod to the lack of drugs and this scene is a way to convey the coming down of a high

Night Fishing:

  • Night fishing uses an Iphone 4 to film the footage, the use of the phone makes the film feel like you have personally experienced what occurs in the film, this all adds to the verisimilitude. The sense of realism in the film makes you more of an active viewer as you feel like the events can happen.

Swimmer:

  • Swimmer is in black and white but not like an old film like Sunrise but as if it was filmed in the day and a filter was applied on top, I'm not particularly fond of the black and white filter. However, I do like the non diegetic sounds from the radio. The tracking shots that follow the swimmer. The way the shots are composed to make them to be cinematically beautiful, making the mise-en-scene to be something I personally look at with interest. From Swimmer I'm going to take the tracking shots.

Elephant:

  • Elephant is an film which uses diegetic sounds with no dramatic editing. The film follows different men walking around a town or city shooting people at random. At first the film looks morbid and cruel but with the context of the IRA in Ireland the shootings convey the innocent people who were effected by the attacks. What I'm taking from Elephant is the long takes and handheld camera.

I was also inspired by music, such as Invisible by 5 Seconds of Summer and Dinosaur by Joey Pecoraro. Invisible is very dark and has a deeper meaning to suicide and being alone in the world and Dinosaur has what sounds like old radio or old film quotes within to add a narrative. I'm hoping that within my film I will use extracts from previous film to piece together the dialogue which is played non diegetically to provide the narrative, the added dialogue won't be overpowering but has its input at various times.
